Gerard Butler stars in ‘Kandahar’ (Photo Courtesy of Open Road Films)
Open Road Films has acquired the North American rights to the action film Kandahar starring Gerard Butler. The thriller reunites Butler with his Greenland and Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh. The duo are also in pre-production on the Greenland follow-up, Greenland: Migration.
“What made Mitch LaFortune’s visceral script so compelling and unique for me is its authenticity and how he humanizes not just our heroes, but all the characters portrayed in a region that’s been locked in a perpetual cycle of violence,” said director Ric Roman Waugh.
In addition to Gerard Butler, the cast includes Navid Negahban (Homeland), Ali Fazal (Death on the Nile), Travis Fimmel (Vikings), and Bollywood star Elnaaz Norouzi (Hello, Charlie!).
Commenting on the acquisition, Open Road Films’ Tom Ortenberg stated, “Kandahar is an adrenaline ride made for the big screen. Gerry, Ric, the G-BASE team, and Thunder Road have outdone themselves with this pulse-pounding actioner that our team is looking forward to bringing to audiences everywhere.”
Mitchell LaFortune co-wrote the screenplay with Waugh, based on LaFortune’s time serving as a military intelligence officer in the Snowden leak era. Scott LaStaiti, MBC Studios’ Ali Jaafar, Capstone’s Christian Mercuri, and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Brendon Boyea produce. G-BASE’s Gerard Butler and Alan Siegel also produce, with James Masciello, Matthew Sidari, Tom Ortenberg, David Haring, Ruzanna Kegeyan, Andrea Dimity, Jonathan Fuhrman, Peter Smith, and Sam Barnett executive producing.
Shot in the AlUla region of Saudi Arabia, Kandahar features Gerard Butler playing undercover CIA operative Tom Harris who’s stuck in “hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down.”
Open Road Films is targeting a 2023 theatrical release.
Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the official trailer for Black Snow, a new six-part series premiering on February 23, 2023. Described as part whodunit and part coming-of-age drama, Black Snow stars Travis Fimmel (Raised By Wolves, Vikings) as a cold-case detective investigating a murder.
In addition to unveiling the official trailer, AMC+ and Sundance Now released a batch of photos ahead of the show’s two-episode premiere.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Fimmel described why Black Snow caught his interest.
“What intrigued me about him is that he’s a very flawed character. He’s got a lot of issues, childhood issues that he’s still dealing with, parental figures, and I think that’s the reason he became a cold-case detective,” said Fimmel. “There’s some stuff that unravels in the story that he went through that is very similar to the stuff that’s going on in the main storyline. I think it’s maybe cathartic for him to be doing what he’s doing, but at the same time it brings up a lot of painful memories.”
The crime drama’s cast also includes newcomers Talijah Blackman-Corowa, Jemmason Power, Molly Fatnowna, Eden Cassady, and Australian musician Ziggy Ramo. Brooke Satchwell (Poker Face), Alexander England (C*A*U*G*H*T), Erik Thomson (C*A*U*G*H*T), Kym Gyngell (No Activity), Rob Carlton (Bali 2002), Jimi Bani (Mabo), Daniela Farinacci (Total Control), and Lucy Bell (The Secrets She Keeps) also star.
Lucas Taylor (Harrow) created the series and writes along with Boyd Quakawoot (Black Comedy) and Beatrix Christian (Jindabyne). Sian Davies (The Gloaming) and Matthew Saville (Please Like Me) directed, and Lois Randall, Kaylene Butler, and Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight served as producers.
The Plot: Part coming-of-age drama and part whodunit, Black Snow follows the mystery of a small-town murder that rocked the Australian South Sea Islander community. In 1995, seventeen-year-old Isabel Baker was murdered. The crime shocked her tight-knit community and left the town devastated. The case was never solved, the killer never found. In 2020, the opening of a time capsule unearths a secret that puts cold-case detective James Cormack (Fimmel) on the trail of the killer.

Gerard Butler stars in ‘Kandahar’ (Photo Courtesy of Open Road Films)
For the second time this year, a film is hitting theaters focusing on the turmoil and chaos in the Middle East and an American and his interpreter fighting to escape Afghanistan. The first was Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The second is the action drama Kandahar with Gerard Butler.
Kandahar centers around Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative portrayed by Butler, who manages to uncover a clandestine nuclear facility in Iran and dismantle it. Although his mission is nearly flawless, a whistleblower at the Pentagon leaks the operation to a British journalist (Elnaaz Norouzi). Consequently, the journalist is apprehended by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and subjected to interrogation.
Harris’s handler, Roman (Travis Fimmel), alerts his agent that his cover has been exposed. He instructs Harris to travel 400 miles to a former CIA facility in Kandahar, where he will be safely extracted from the country. Harris informs his confused translator, Muhammad (Navid Negahban), “Our cover is blown…we leave in 15 minutes.” He proceeds to destroy any incriminating evidence, including his laptop and operation-related documents.
As the unlikely pair trek across the perilous and seemingly endless desert, they are pursued by multiple groups, including Afghan forces, the Taliban, and Kahil (Ali Fazal), a Pakistani ISIS-K agent tasked with capturing Harris so they can sell him to the highest bidder.
Director Ric Roman Waugh reunites with his Angel Has Fallen and Greenland star Gerard Butler for Kandahar, a suspenseful, gritty thriller with exciting action scenes and solid performances by its two leading men. Butler is perfectly cast as Harris, a lifelong spy who can’t imagine himself doing anything else and is exceptional at his job. Butler also brings a relatable human element to Harris with the backstory of his loving daughter whose childhood he missed and a failed marriage that couldn’t survive his career.
Navid Negahban is terrific as Muhammed, Harris’s translator who becomes tied to Harris in a race to get out of what once was his country and get to the US to reunite with his family. Negahban has solid chemistry with Butler, and the few quiet scenes between the two men, as they either hide or catch their breath, give the film its heart. They must trust each other and work together if they are to have any chance of making it to the CIA airbase.
Ali Fazal delivers a standout performance as Kahil, the Pakistani agent on the hunt for Harris and Muhammed. Fazal portrays Kahil as a deliberate, crafty, and stylish foe who also happens to have impressive motorcycle riding skills in the desolate desert.
Mitchell LaFortune, a former military intelligence officer, has created a screenplay that exudes authenticity and realism. The backstory of the main characters is well-developed, allowing the audience to empathize and support them. The action scenes are thrilling and well-choreographed. One particularly impressive and exhilarating scene involves a nighttime helicopter and truck chase that utilized night vision goggles and featured breathtaking stunts and camera work.
Kandahar is a gripping chase film that boasts impressive performances, stirring action scenes, and smart screenplay. The R-rated action film keeps you on the edge of your seat and is worth checking out for fans of the genre.

AMC+ and Sundance Now released the first two photos from the upcoming second season of Black Snow as shooting is underway in Queensland. The photos feature returning series star Travis Fimmel (Vikings) as Detective Cormack and series newcomer Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) as Zoe Jacobs.
Season one premiered in December 2022. Sundance Now hasn’t announced a launch date for the six-episode second season.
“I think Australian film and television has never been stronger. Now, with the addition of streaming networks and their reach, I’m so proud that our local productions and their hard work can be recognised not only here but around the world,” said Fimmel. “I’m excited to be a part of another season of Black Snow and showing off what Australians have to offer. That, and I’m happy to have free food and a job.”
In addition to McKinnon, new season two stars include Megan Smart (Class of ’07), Alana Mansour (Erotic Stories), Dan Spielman (Bad Behaviour), Victoria Haralabidou (Tourist), and Kat Stewart (Offspring). “We are thrilled to be working with Stan again and back in Queensland filming the second season of Black Snow. The audience response in Australia and around the world to series one was incredible and we can’t wait to bring this new story with this wonderful group of actors to the screen – including Travis Fimmel who is once again utterly compelling in the role of Cormack,” stated executive producer Rosemary Blight.
Director Sian Davies and Helena Brooks direct season two episodes.
Sundance Now offered this brief description of the new season: “In this second season, Detective Cormack tackles two separate missing persons cases. One is professional, as he investigates the disappearance of Zoe Jacobs (McKinnon), who disappeared from her own 21st birthday party in 2003. And the other is personal, as Cormack searches desperately for his own younger brother, who went missing when they were children.”
